I couldn’t agree more. Columbus is no reason to close our nation’s banks, post offices and courts of justice. No reason to celebrate a day off from school. What he did is dispicable. See my anti-Columbus Day diatribe called Will I Lie to My Kids Today about Columbus Day at http://www.8centimetersdeluded.blogspot.com Thanks for a great post today.

even if you want to celebrate the European “discovery” of America, Columbus wasn’t the one who did that… Leif Ericson was here 500 years earlier. Columbus was, as Don said, a notably nasty figure, even as the explorers went – folks like Hudson, Champlain and Lewis and Clark tried talking to the local people, instead of enslaving and killing them. Columbus was also a notably poor navigator, consistently believing he had reached India (despite the fact that the Greeks knew the true diameter of the Earth 1500 years before Columbus, and it was clear that India couldn’t be that close)

I’ve seen a reimaging of Columbus Day as Bad Navigation Day, “celebrated” by trying to get lost… It is almost impossible to wind up on a continent you did not intend to visit, though.
Thanks for the post, all of which I agree with.
