Have you ever been fast asleep only to be woken up by your computer waking itself from sleep? Ever wonder exactly why it woke up? I found a tip on the web recently that gave a great and easy way to try to determine what woke the computer up.
You’ll have to dive into Terminal a bit to get this information, and you may not necessarily get an answer. After your machine wakes up launch Terminal and type the following in:
syslog |grep -i “Wake reason”
You’ll then get a report from your OS that will give a code that tells you why the machine woke up. The article I found give some common error codes:
OHC (Open Host Controller): This likely means an external device like a USB keyboard or mouse woke the machine. It could also be an external FireWire device like a hard drive. To my knowledge, this should also include Thunderbolt devices as well.
EHS (Enhanced Host Controller): Similar to OHC except it’s usually wireless or Bluetooth devices.
USB (Universal Serial Bus): A USB device woke the computer.
LID0: This literally refers to the lid of your laptop. You shouldn’t see this code if you’re on a desktop.
PWRB: This refers to the Power Button of the computer.
RTC (Real Time Clock): This refers to wake-on-demand services like scheduling your computer with sleep and wake times in the Energy Saver settings.
As always, mess with Terminal at your own risk. Before you all start emailing me with other ways to do this, the article does point out that that there are other ways you can monitor this in the Console application, but this way you don’t need to wade through extensive logs filled with gobbledygook.

I get an error message saying “Could not create disc1.cdr. Not recognized. What does this mean?
That specific error could be the result of many things, a scratched disk, a failing drive, insufficient space on your Hard Drive to which the Machine is trying to save the Disk Image.
I get the same message as Bogo, with every CD I try to copy (and wich is not protected by any copyright). I am running OSX 10.4.10 on an Intel MacBook. Does anybody know a solution to that problem?

I had the same problem as the others with the first blank disk I tried, then the next one worked. ??!
hey. for the people having the errors, try changing the encryption from none to the one that sais (reccomended) by it. that used to work for me but i no longer have that problem.
Used this process today to copy a DVD….
….but the drive will not verify. Gets through the whole process then quits only a minute or two into verifying contents.

The process for creating an image of a cd works up to a point and then hangs. Disk Utility shows that it is Creating Image “xyz.cdr” and says that it is Copying…, but the copying process never ends.
There is a easy way to copy cds & dvds. Easy DVD Copy is a great tool which allows you to make a backup copy of a DVD movies that you own.
When I click the image on my desktop it opens the folders, it doesn’t act like the DVD.

Sorry, no, I could not make the .cdr file. My Images drop-down does not include the CD/DVD option. Best copy I can get omits the menus, stories and template of the original DVD.
I want a byte-by-byte copy and that seems impossible.

i’m able to save the dvd as a new image .cdr file. but when i try to burn it to a dvd, the “burn” button is grayed out & the blank dvd ejects seconds after i put it in. i have the combo drive (does it matter? b’cuz i’ve heard of the superdrive)
Combo drive can read DVD’s and burn cd media but cannot be used for DVD-R media. You need a different optical drive
