The PC guy is John Hodgman. He is on The Daily Show and is the humor editor for New York Times Magazine.

The brilliant thing about casting John Hodgman as the PC guy is that he’s so utterly likeable. This is utterly crucial to the ads: it invites the audience to identify with him, to see themselves in his position, and even root for him to get the message the Mac guy is offering. If the PC guy were a “Bill Gates” character, he’d be arrogant and geeky, sneeringly confident that he’s smarter than the rest of us—not that Bill Gates is like that in real life, but that would be the cartoonish stereotype he represents. It would come across as an attack on PC users. Instead, the commercials seem like an invitation to them.
