Frequent kernal panics don’t always indicate hardware problems. My new iMac had kernal panics at every restart, and would never fully shut down (choosing shut down simply caused a panic, and it restarted).

Turned out the culprit was software I installed to access my work over the internet (Cisco’s VPN client). It was hard to uninstall (that caused panics too), but once it was removed I’ve had no problems since.

If you’re having kernal panics, I’d also recommend checking to see if you’ve installed software recently and doing a search to see if others are having the same problem.

Many thanks to Todd. My Mac Mini won’t stay up for more than 10 minutes, if that. It will reboot off the Mac DVD, and disk repair shows no problems. If I can get it to restart, I’ve backed up to cd’s and removed recent changes. One common thing between my Mac Mini and our iMac, was a professional photography printhouse had us go into the Java preferences and allocate more memory to use their online image upload. Since, we’ve had to replace the hard drive in the iMac, it wouldn’t even boot, and even after removing the Java changes, my Mini hasn’t resolved it’s issues. Is this coincidence, or the culprit?

    Thanks!
