The sun is out here and other than the people walking by with coats on you could not tell it was in the 50s. On the other hand, Emily tells me that the snow is coming down, the temperatures dropping, and we are getting notifications from UPS of delivery and pick-up delays.

I will be heading out to Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show this week. I have a number of meetings but I am mostly going to see the new stuff and get a handle on what the future of technology might be. I remember several years ago when the first drones appeared at the show and now there is literally a complete hall for drones. I wonder what will be new this year. Okay, I am also going to place my annual $50 bet at the sports book on the Cubs and the Celtics.

Jezebel loves the dog park so much that she strained a muscle playing with all the other dogs. When we get to the park she immediately runs to greet every dog and then runs all out with the dogs until she is so tired she asks to leave. Well, a little too much roughhousing got her a strain, some pain and she can’t see her buddies for a few weeks while she heals.

Since my Chevy Volt has Apple CarPlay I usually use my iPhone and the Apple Maps App for navigation. Lately I have noticed that every time I launch Maps it wants to take me to the location “Key West Personal Chef” which happened to be the first entry in my destinations and a random pin that I had dropped on the map. This was frustrating to me and, try as I might, I was not able to delete that pin. Grace said that might be an interesting Kibbles article so here we go.

Tip 1 – Removing a Pin from Apple Maps

This has changed when Apple improved and updated the iOS. It is not as easy as I thought it would be, swiping on it didn’t work, hitting the info button didn’t work and 3D touch was not effective. I did some research, and found to remove a pin or previous destination simply swipe up to see the list of destinations and swipe left to remove. This is different if it is a previous destination or a pin that came from a search. Previous destinations can just be swiped away but those from a search have another step. You must first click into the search box and then you can swipe to remove the pin.

Tip 2 – How to Find Where you Parked

I actually have several parking applications. Some pay for meters and some remember where the car is parked (if you’ve remembered to mark the location). But, to make things easier, if you have paired your iPhone with your car via Bluetooth or through CarPlay it will remember where you parked. You will have to make sure some things are enabled for this to work. Go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services to make sure it is turned on. While in Location Services, go to System Services, and turn on Significant Locations. When your phone disconnects from your car, you will receive a notification and now Parked Car will show up on your map.

Tip 3- Turn on Compass Mode

It has taken me some time to get used to looking at maps where north is not up. I used to participate in these really tricky map rallies called the St. Valentines Day Massacre and that set my compass with north up! But with Apple Maps, because you may not know which way is up, you can activate “compass mode” easily. Simply tap the blue location arrow to find your current location and then tap it again and you will see a little compass showing your orientation. If you don’t want to see the compass, simply tap on it and it will go away.

Tip 4 – Clear your Location History

Let’s just say you search for directions to some places you don’t want anyone to know about, like the gift shop for your wife or you are a secret agent and want to cover your tracks. Apple Maps will keep track of where you have been, but you can clear that history easily if you want to. Go to Settings, select Privacy, and then Location Services. Tap on System Services, which can be found at the bottom of the list, and then tap on Significant Locations to see your travel history. You can clear your location history by tapping on Clear History at the bottom or selectively edit your locations by selecting that location and swiping left.

It is traditional for me to review my 2017 predictions this time of the year. It has been a tough year in many respects with political turmoil, scandals, really awful hurricanes and wildfires and senseless acts of violence. I have to say I am not sad to see 2017 in the rearview mirror.

So, how did I do?

Cubs will repeat as the start of a dynasty!
The Cubbies got the World Series hangover and didn’t make it out of the first round of the playoffs.

Warriors will win the NBA but Celtics make it to Eastern Conference Finals.
The Warriors did win and the Celtics did make it to the Eastern Conference Finals (and then traded off the almost the whole team)so I get the win here!

Lots ‘o snow for Vermont and a bad mud season.
Well, not too much snow although there is some on the ground now. Mud season came in stages and well, I wasn’t there so it wasn’t so bad. So, no win here.

Large demonstrations in major cities protesting Trump-led changes.
Yes, many of those but not nearly enough to make a change. We live in interesting times.

Apple will definitely hit an all-time high stock price.
Apple just keeps on rolling – yes, an all-time high.

Something completely bizarre and chaotic will happen in the US political system.
Let me count the ways. A democrat wins in Alabama? Republicans shoot themselves in the foot with a misguided tax bill? #metoo means women get some respect?
We live in interesting times.

There will be confirmed existence of extra-terrestrial life.
Well now…There was confirmation of a secret government investigation of UFOs and it had some interesting reports but nope – I do not call it confirmation. I DO wonder what that long cigar-like object was that passed through our solar system.

Apple will make a surprising acquisition.
I was not surprised.

Tesla will not ship the model 3.
This one is a push. Tesla did deliver some hand-made Model 3s, mainly to employees so I guess I lose not his one, too.

Apple will ship an Amazon Echo competitor that will make Alexa seem as lame as Google Home.
Apple messed with me on this one by pushing the HomePod into 2018. They are going to have to do some heavy lifting to overcome Amazon’s Echo.

And one softball… 2017 will be a much better year than 2016!
I am giving myself a loss on this one, too, 2017 was not a nice year. 4 right 6 wrong, hence my change in predicting tools! Check back next week for the 2018 predictions.

Dear Friends,

I am feeling just a tad guilty for basking in the Key West sunshine while my buddies in Vermont are freezing their Rudolph noses off. Very cold temperatures and wind have created very dangerous wind chills. Of course, that means that things are failing at my house for my tenants like the water and heat. It is a good thing I have great neighbors and people to watch out over my place.

Okay, I am not really feeling guilty because I have the doors open, there is a nice ocean breeze and my feet have tan lines from wearing sandals. As we wrap up 2017, I am looking forward to a fresh new year. I will be heading out for my annual trip to Las Vegas for the Consumer Electronics Show and will report on the latest trends in technology.

Key West has a big New Year’s celebration with a concert at the newly constructed waterfront amphitheatre, fireworks and not one, not two but three separate “drops”. There is the cross-dresser in the giant red heel, the huge conch shell at Sloppy Joes and the wench dropping from the mast of the tall ship at the docks. While the recovery is still on-going from hurricane Irma, it has very clearly taken its toll with businesses here in the Keys as tourist traffic is down significantly and even parking downtown is easy.

This week’s Kibbles & Bytes Exclusive is a Hammerhead bundle. Hammerhead is our house brand, originally named after my late bulldog. We have a number of Hammerhead products but this special consists of two long 2 meter Apple licensed Lightning Cables, one 2-port USB Charger, one 2-port car charger and a green selfie stick – okay, we will toss in a pair of Chill Pill speakers, too! This bundle is only $39.99!

Apple had a great 2017, posting record sales and profits and introducing some game changing products and software. I wonder what they are going to do with the estimated $45 billion windfall they will receive from the recently passed backwards wealth distribution.

But enough political commentary, it is Christmas! Let’s review some highlights of Apple’s 2017!

The iPhone X

My experience with the iPhone X has been the best of any new iPhone and I have had them all. I love the new iPhone with its space age facial recognition, Apple Pay Cash, wireless charging and wicked fast speed. My iPhone X is more powerful than the computers used to send astronauts to the moon and it fits in my hand. It has been a huge success, selling millions already!

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus

The iPhone 8 and 8 Plus also brought wireless charging and better cameras at a more reasonable price. They are not the game-changing iPhone X but they are new and selling very well.

Apple TV 4K

That’s been the hit of the season with the new Apple TV being hard to get and probably stimulating sales of new 4K TVs, too. Sony and Samsung should thank Apple. With Amazon Prime video now on Apple TV there is becoming less and less reason to have cable TV. I think that cable and satellite is not long for this world.

AirPods

Yeah, they shipped right before Christmas last year but they have been in short supply ever since. This could be the hottest Apple accessory product ever. We sell every one we can get our hands on and have had hundreds on order for months. The backlog on these is unbelievable. One distributor told me they are backordered some 35,000 units.

ARKit

iOS 11 introduced ARKit, a new framework that allows the creation of augmented reality experiences for iPhone and iPad. By blending digital objects and information with the environment around you, ARKit takes apps beyond the screen, freeing them to interact with the real world in entirely new ways. New apps using ARKit are coming out daily and we are just seeing the tip of the gigantic (melting) iceberg here!

iPad Pro 10.5 Inch

My favorite iPad. I find that unless I am working with my two big displays and our database and a couple spreadsheets open, that my iPad Pro 10.5 will do it all. I have mine paired with the Brydge keyboard case and I can see the day when that is all I will need. It is a huge advancement in the iPad line for 2017

iOS 11

iOS 11 is a big software operating system upgrade that among other things, brought us Apple Pay Cash. It changed how you interacted with devices, especially if your are using an iPhone X.

Apple Watch Series 3

Okay, no more Dick Tracy metaphors but the Apple Watch Series 3 was groundbreaking with its stand-alone cellular capabilities. Grace seldom takes her iPhone with her anymore as she answers her calls right from her watch. While you do pay for that privilege there is also a GPS model that makes Apple the clear leader in wearables.

iMac Pro

I was just making part numbers for all the various configurations of this new powerhouse Mac. You can buy the base model for just under $5,000 or soup it up big time and spend over $13,000! This is just shipping now so I might have to talk about it again in 2018.

AppleCare + for Macs

AppleCare + has been around for awhile for iPhones and iPads but this year Apple rolled out AppleCare + for Macs. It still has all the benefits of AppleCare – extending your warranty from 1-year to 3-years and technical support from 90-days to 3-years but now it adds accidental damage coverage for two incidents subject to a deductible. This is great for all those customers who come in with moisture sensors tripped but swear they didn’t spill that glass of wine on their laptop.

I would also mention HomePod except that Apple delayed that to 2018 so I would have something to write about next year. All-in-all a great year for Apple. iPad regained its sales mojo, new Macs, new iPhones, Watches and more future shock!
