Dear Friends,

Grace and I have been doing a purge of our Prickly Mountain home since we have it up for sale. That means selling or donating our collections of stuff. And I do mean collections; I have boxes of wind-up toys, thousands of CDs and DVDs, hundreds of hippo and chicken chotchskis, and a whole lot of winter clothes and get that we will never be using. It is a 45 year collection of collections so this might take some time.

Have you checked out the Sonos “sets” sale? There are some great options for buying Sonos speakers as a set. We have found that many customers come in for a single Sonos speaker and, once they have used it for a few weeks, they come back in to buy more. Sorta like potato chips! This is a great way to get a set at a good discount. We only sell Sonos in our stores so drop on by and take a listen!

This week’s Kibbles & Bytes Exclusive features the 10.5-inch iPad Pro with 256GB storage, Wi-Fi and Cellular. I have only two of these that are dented carton units that have been opened for inspection. The contents are new and have a 1-year Apple warranty. We will bundle these with AppleCare + so that you have 2-years of warranty coverage and technical support and accidental damage coverage, too! I have only two and I have priced them aggressively so it is first come, first served for the 10.5 Inch iPad Pro with AppleCare +. The regular price for this bundle is $1029 but for a couple lucky Kibbles & Bytes readers you can have the bundle for only $859!

I am really looking forward to the new Apple software. I think I will use the walkie-talkie feature of the Apple Watch a lot. Yeah, I know you can text or call but just pushing the “talk” button and being in instant communication is way cool.

Grace pretty much has gotten the garden in. We had a funny moment as we were a pair of draft horses hauling a bag of lime and couple bags of compost up to the garden. It would have been funny to watch as these two old foggies struggled to haul the cart up the hill and then just as we hit the garden the entire floor of the garden cart gave up the ghost and gave way. I guess I’ll have some rebuilding on my schedule with a few sheets of plywood.

Dear Friends,

I almost hopped into the car and started driving back to Key West when the high temperature here in Vermont was in the 40s this week! I think we will see some return to normal June temperatures by this weekend, but it certainly was an unexpected thrill to search for long sleeved shirts.

Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference was this week and, as usual, software and operating systems were the focus of this gathering of software developers. We have a comprehensive run-down of what you will be seeing this fall from Apple for Mac, iOS, Watch and Apple TV operating systems in this week’s edition.

One interesting tidbit that most reports are not talking about is that Apple’s AirPods will gain the “Live Listen” feature that heretofore has been only available with some of the MFI Hearing Aids. This enables you to place your iPhone in the middle of the conference table or even at the lectern in a big hall and have the audio streamed to your hearing aids or, in this case, to Apple AirPods. How long before Apple gets into the hearing aid business?

This week’s Kibbles & Bytes Exclusive features the 9.7-inch iPad Pro with 256GB of storage, Wi-Fi and Cellular. I have two units in Gold and one in Rose Gold. These are brand new and come with Apple’s 1-year warranty. They are a discontinued product but can be a powerful navigation tool or production iPad. They regularly sold for over $800 but for these three units you can snag a brand new iPad Pro for only $649!

I will be riding my Indian motorcycle over to Manchester, NH to my dealer so they can address a couple of recalls on the bike. Something about the bike starting up by itself or something! Hopefully the weather will cooperate for the ride down I-89.

I wonder what’s going to be new at WWDC. I am always wowed at what Apple has in store as they give us a glimpse of the product and features coming in the future. I think we will see some good progress on AR – artificial reality stuff. Last year on the annual Road Pitch there was a company that was developing AR applications for schools that would give students seemingly real time experiences at historical events. It is sort of like time traveling!

I hope you have a wonderful first weekend of June!

I have been a photo bug since I was a kid. I have had cameras my entire life and even built a darkroom into my home up on Prickly Mountain. While I still own a half dozen cameras, I now shoot almost exclusively with my iPhone X. I have a nice SLR with fancy lenses and an underwater case, strobes and all the gear for shooting underwater when I scuba dive. I also have a little Olympus waterproof camera to take with me to the beach or when I am snorkeling. But for everything else it is my iPhone.

I gave up the harsh chemicals and the joy of the trays of developer and fixer under the red lights in the darkroom for digital as soon as iPhoto came out. I seldom print any of my photos, except for some underwater shots that grace my living room wall. Just like music, everything is digital with photos.

Shooting portraits has always been a trick but Apple and iPhone make portraits a snap, especially with the new iPhone X and also the iPhone 7 or 8 plus. Portrait mode uses the dual cameras on your iPhone 7 Plus, iPhone 8 Plus, and iPhone X to create a depth-of-field effect. This lets you create a photo that keeps your subject in sharp focus while creating a blurred background so as to not distract from the object of your attention. With your iPhone 8 Plus or iPhone X, you can also add captivating portrait lighting effects to your image. And the TrueDepth camera in iPhone X even lets you take a selfie in Portrait mode.

It is a piece of cake to get the perfect portrait shot. Just swipe to Portrait and take the picture. The Camera app even gives you tips in real time. So if you’re too close, too far away, or the area is too dark, the camera lets you know. You can also use True Tone flash, set a timer, or apply camera filters.

1) Open the Camera app
2) Swipe to Portrait Mode
3) Look for the yellow Portrait box
4) Snap the pic

After you take your Portrait photo, you can make photo edits—like crop and auto-enhance.

Even better, if you have an iPhone X or iPhone 8 Plus you can use the Portrait Lighting feature to apply four impressive studio-quality lighting effects to your Portrait mode images. Choose from Studio Light to brighten facial features, Contour Light for more dramatic directional lighting, Stage Light to isolate your subject in the spotlight, or Stage Mono for stage light in a classic black and white.

1) Select the photo that you want to change
2) Tap Edit
3) Swipe to choose your Lighting effect
4) Tap Done

If you have an iPhone X, you can even capture selfies in Portrait mode the same way you take a photo of someone else.

1) Just flip to the front camera
2) Open the Camera app
3) Swipe to Portrait mode
4) Hold your iPhone X in front of your face and strike a pose
5) Snap your selfie with one of the volume buttons

Oops, you didn’t want that blurred background because it contains a hidden clue to that buried treasure? No problem, you can remove it in a few quick steps.

1) Select the photo that you want to change
2) Tap Edit
3) Tap Portrait at the top of your screen to take it out of Portrait mode

If you change your mind and want to re-add the Portrait mode effect, go back to Edit and tap Portrait again.

Dear Friends,

The lilacs are in full bloom at my house and the sweet smell permeates the air. My giant arctic kiwi plant has sort of crushed my rebar arbor but the huge plant seems to be able to stand on its own. I got the rototiller out and started churning up a winter’s harvest of rocks, breaking a shear pin in the process. But the job got done and we’re all ready to plant our garden.

Jezebel seems to like Vermont but she is taking too much advantage of the free range boonies, and so we now have to keep her on leash or stay with her constantly or she will go too far out on an adventure. When she is in the living room she is either snoring on the couch or watching TV with us. She still barks at any dog that she sees on the TV and even barked at herself while we were mirroring in order to choose a picture to send to an artist who will immortalize her and Max in a stained glass piece.

Apple’s Worldwide Developer Conference starts on Monday and the Keynote will be at 1PM eastern time. We are all anxious to see the new roadmap and as usual, I will probably start running a new beta of Apple software shortly after the event. While it is unusual for Apple to introduce hardware at this software conference, it has been done. We will bring you all the details next week!

This week’s Kibbles & Bytes Exclusive features the CTO 12-inch MacBook. These units all feature the 1.3GhZ m7 processor, 8GB of ram and a big 512GB SSD drive. We only have a couple of each color so this exclusive is strictly while supplies last. This custom configuration normally sells for $1649.99 but this week only while supply lasts you can get one for $100 off at $1549.99! We have a few units in Gold, Silver or Space Gray.

I hope you have a wonderful and safe Memorial Day Weekend. Our South Burlington store will be open but all other stores and offices will be closed on Monday. I haven’t quite figured out what we are doing, but I know for sure I will be getting out on my Indian motorcycle for some mountain viewing.

Grace and I are putting our Prickly Mountain house up for sale so we are working on downsizing. I don’t know if my angst about selling has more to do with our beautifully landscaped yard that we have worked so hard to create, or just my nearly 50 years of accumulated stuff. The place is just too big and too many stairs for us old folks so there is some change afoot.

Now that Apple has discontinued the Time Capsule how are you backing up your Mac? While I still use legacy Apple gear on my Eero network to emulate a Time Capsule, I also have a drive on my desk at the office that I use for my most secure back up. As a friend in the business would say “ May you have a thousand back-ups and never need one!”

Backing up your Mac is like flossing your teeth: everyone knows they should do it every night, but too many people never get around to it. Unlike flossing, once you set up backups, they don’t require daily attention. And turning on Apple’s Time Machine backup feature is easy—simply open System Preferences > Time Machine, click Select Backup Disk, and pick a hard drive to hold your backups.

Ah, but here’s the rub. If you don’t have an appropriate hard drive, you will need to get one, and there are tons of options. Here’s our rundown of what to look for, with added recommendations.

How Much Space Do You Need?

The first question when looking for a backup drive is how much data it needs to hold. You could put a lot of effort into figuring this out, but for most people, the answer simple. Buy the largest drive you can reasonably afford, as long as it will hold at least two to three times as much data as you have on your Mac or anticipate creating in the near future.

Say you have a MacBook Pro with a 512 GB SSD. You could get by with a 1 TB backup drive, which would be twice as large as your internal drive. But if a 1 TB drive costs $100 and a 2 TB drive costs $130, it’s worth the extra $30 to double the available space!

How Will You Connect It to Your Mac?

With external hard drives, you need to match the ports on your Mac with the ports on the drive. That might sound tricky, what with USB 3, FireWire, USB-C, and Thunderbolt. Luckily, for most people, the right choice is simple: a drive that supports USB 3. They’re inexpensive and plenty fast for backups.
Nearly every Mac sold since 2012 supports USB 3, either via the familiar USB-A port or the newer USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 port. If your Mac has only USB-C ports—as would be the case if you have either a MacBook or a recent MacBook Pro—you may also need an adapter cable that’s USB-A on one end and USB-C on the other, although many drives now also include USB-C support.

What Type of Drive Should You Buy?

Inside the case, an external hard drive contains either a 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch drive mechanism.
2.5-inch drives are smaller, more portable, and usually bus-powered, meaning they get power from your computer instead of from a wall outlet, making them easier to hook up and use. They’re also designed to be more rugged. On the downside, they cost more per gigabyte, max out at 5 TB in size, and are often slower.

3.5-inch drives usually need to be plugged in to power, and they’re less appropriate to carry around. However, they cost less per gigabyte and can be bought easily in sizes up to 8 TB. They also tend to support more connection types, making them more flexible.

If you work mostly on a notebook Mac and lead a mobile lifestyle, carrying a bus-powered 2.5-inch drive ensures you can back up while traveling. Such a drive might also be best for a MacBook-equipped college student. However, if your Mac mostly sits on a desk or you bring your laptop back to the same place every night, you’ll likely be better served by a 3.5-inch drive—they’re faster, cheaper, and store more data.

Putting It All Together

Since the hard drive mechanisms are made by a relatively small number companies, the differences between external drives mostly come down to the price, industrial design, and extra ports. We have had great luck with drives from Seagate, LaCie and G-Tech. Feel free to ask us for specific recommendations for your setup and some special deals on storage.

We are driving two vehicles back to Vermont this year since Grace has traded her motorcycle in for a Jeep. Jezebel and I will ride in the Volt and meet up with Grace and Max each night. We never seem to have enough time to do much other than drive fast on I-95. I’d like to meander a bit but we have a schedule, appointments, work, etc. so it looks like we’ll be riding the big road for three days.

I have checked my Arlo cameras at my house and I can confirm that the snow is completely gone, the grass is getting green and the daffodils are coming up so it is clearly time to migrate!

Emily will be taking care of you next week for Kibbles as we conclude our trip north.

Thank you so much for reading this issue of Kibbles & Bytes!

I have to change some cables on my motorcycle. I guess they don’t much like the salty air down here. I will do that and clean it up for the summer nap. I think I have to eat a lot of seafood over the next couple of weeks since the super fresh seafood here in Key West has spoiled my taste for seafood in land-locked Vermont. Then again, I will have to journey over to nearby Maine once I get back!

We will be working on our migration plan and getting this house ready for renters. I have a lot of batteries to change in locks and lights and a lot of stuff to put away. Grace and I are beginning to look forward to the trek North.
